About Dr. Gousse
A graduate of Yale University School of Medicine, Dr. Angelo Gousse is a former tenured Professor of Urology (Current Voluntary Professor) at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Department of Urology, Vice-Chairman of the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics Urology service, where he was also the Urology Residency Program Director and Fellowship Director for Female Urology, Urodynamics, and Reconstructive Surgery for more than 10 years.
He completed his residency at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and a postdoctoral fellowship in urodynamics, female urology, and pelvic floor reconstruction at the University of California Los Angeles.
He is Board Certified in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery and by the American Board of Urology. Dr Gousse served a long tenure on the prestigious executive Board of the Society for Urodynamics Female Pelvic Medicine and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU). He served as Chair of residency education.
Dr. Gousse’s research interests have focused on urinary incontinence in male and female, overactive bladder neuropharmacology, reconstruction of the urinary tract, neurogenic urinary incontinence, as well as functional recovery from spinal cord injury. An international leader in voiding dysfunction and reconstruction, he has pioneered the optimal dosage of neurotoxins to manage bladder dysfunction. He led several clinical trials leading to FDA approval of Botox in Urology. Over the past seven years, he has collaborated on extramural NIH grants with basic scientists to investigate urinary markers for interstitial cystitis. He has authored or co-authored more than 70 peer-reviewed scientific publications and numerous textbook chapters, journal articles, and abstracts, and has participated as a guest (visiting ) professor in the United States and globally on various aspects of reconstructive urology.
His professional awards and honors include a listing in Best Doctors in America 2005 to 2018, News and World Report, Best Urologists in America’s, Top Urologists by the prestigious Consumer’s Research Council of America 2008, Strathmore’s Who’s Who since 2001, the Miller University of Miami Medical School’s Urology Lifetime Teaching Award on numerous occasions, the Pfizer Scholars in Urology Award, and the Cullen Research Award from the Scott Department of Urology, Baylor College of Medicine, and the Dr. Jonas Salk Scholar Award for his work on E. Coli microbial genetics.
Dr. Gousse performs complex urologic reconstructive surgery on male and female patients after cancer treatment or previous failed surgery. He continues to train Fellows in his subspecialty. Having performed the most artificial urinary sphincter in South Florida and a large number of inflatable penile prosthesis , he is considered a high volume and nationally renowned prosthetic surgeon. He regularly presents his peer reviewed prosthetic work at the annual American Urologic Association ( AUA ) meeting. He is currently chief surgeon and investigator for a novel patented artificial urinary sphincter based on bluetooth technology.( Precision Medical Devices )
He is on Staff at Aventura Hospital ( HCA Healthcare ), Memorial Hospital Medical System, University of Miami Hospital and Clinics, Jackson Memorial Hospital System, Good Samaritan Hospital ( West Palm Beach ).
A dedicated teacher, mentor, and researcher, Dr Gousse enjoys community work in underserved areas to benefit the less fortunate. He is the host for community radio and television health shows. Dr Gousse is the co-founder and past president of the Haitian American Leadership Organization (HALO). Dr Gousse travels frequently to Haiti to teach Haitian residents and urologists. He spearheaded the Global Association for the Support of Haitian Urology (GASHU ) which supports the development and awareness of modern Urology in Haiti. He serves as the Official American Urologic Association representative to help develop Urologic care in Haiti He was recently elected as the Vice President of the Association des Medecins Haitiens a L’Etranger South Florida ( AMHE – South Florida ) and a Committee member of the AUA Neurogenic Bladder Guidelines .
